Major improvements to M5 junction 23 welcomed in Burnham

Burnham-On-Sea's Mayor has welcomed the news that a busy motorway junction near the town is to be given a major overhaul.

The Government announced on Monday that junction 23 of the M5 is to be improved as part of a £15m road investment programme.

The new scheme will see an upgrading of the junction to provide better access to Hinkley Point and Huntspill Energy Park.

The decision has been welcomed by Sedgemoor District Council. Claire Faun, Corporate Relations Manager, said: "The council’s Strategy and Development team has campaigned for this essential investment that will not only support Hinkley as a Nationally Significant Infrastructure project but also will enable continued economic growth in Bridgwater and support the comprehensive regeneration of employment site at the old ROF factory."

"The investment will tackle a potential infrastructure deficit in the future as we are delighted that this has been recognised early to avoid barriers to development and growth in future years."

And Burnham and Highbridge Mayor Martin Cox, pictured, told "This busy motorway junction is used by many thousands motorists approaching Burnham and Highbridge from the south."

"It's a very welcome announcement that the junction will soon be improved, especially given all the extra Hinkley construction traffic over the coming years and the potential for lots of disruption."
