Police in Burnham-On-Sea have this week been targeting rogue traders as part of a national week of action focussing on criminals who con people.
Rogue traders are criminals who charge homeowners extortionate rates for services such as home or garden improvements which are either overpriced, poor quality or not required.
These criminals often target elderly people and leave victims feeling scared in their own home, distrusting of strangers and can often suffer ill health due to the stress of their experience.
Working with partners and organisations such as Trading Standards, activities have been happening across Somerset to shine a spotlight on those who target vulnerable people.
Burnham and Highbridge Police have this week visited the U3A in Burnham to provide advice to residents, and they have also held several information awareness events at Asda in Highbridge and Tesco in Burnham.
They were giving advice and talking to shoppers about rogue traders and distraction burglars.
Officers have also been visiting farms, scrap metal dealers and other businesses in the area to talk to them about rogue traders and unlicensed scrap collectors.
Chief Inspector Paul Mogg said: “Rogue traders and distraction burglars target vulnerable people and exploit them for their own profit and we simply won’t tolerate it. These criminals and their activities are on our radar all year but designated weeks of action such as this help us to raise awareness within our communities. Everyone can play a part in preventing and reporting this type of crime.”
“The general advice we have been giving this week is – if you aren’t sure, then don’t open the door. Genuine callers will make an appointment or will happily show you their identification on request. If you are unsure, or you don’t want their services say no.”
“If are offered a service you should be offered a written quote on headed paper, and given a mandatory cooling-off period to enable you to change your mind. If you feel pressured or intimidated, then please call the police.”
