Highbridge student sets sail across the English Channel

-

A Highbridge student was among a group of young people who have just returned from a week at sea on a round journey from Ramsgate to Calais in France.

The students from Bridgwater College set sail on a Sigma 362 yacht, after 20 weeks of preparation as part of an assessment during their Foundation Degree.

They faced a range of weather conditions including light wind and sunshine to stormy weather with hail stones and rough seas. The students returned to Chatham via the Isle of Sheppey.

Highbridge’s Ben Hester said one of the biggest challenges was negotiating the crossing of the Dover Strait, which is one of the busiest shipping channels in the world.

Another student, Christopher Logan, added: “It has been a great expedition which enabled me to make huge progress toward my ‘RYA Day Skipper’ qualification. Laughter and camaraderie made the whole crew bond together especially when conditions were challenging.”
