Burnham-On-Sea could miss out on £25,000 in developer funding after Sanders Garden World bosses this week said they have no plans to proceed with a huge extension which they were recently given planning permission for.

As first reported here, Sanders has been given a ‘green light’ to expand its premises by 3,200 metres and create a new roundabout on the A38.

£25,000 of community funding – or so-called Section 106 money – was included in the agreement to compensate Burnham town centre for the firm’s expansion.

However, the centre, which is owned by The Garden Centre Group, says it is does not intend to start the development in the near future, meaning the Section 106 money will not be paid in the short-term.

In a statement, a spokesman for The Garden Centre Group said: “I have spoken to our property department team and I can confirm that planning permission was granted from a proposal that was submitted back in 2008.”

“The permission was only granted in February 2014 but we currently have no plans to carry out any work pursuant to the permission.”

The plans were submitted while Sanders Garden World was owned by previous owners Wyevale.
