Young Burnham-On-Sea volunteer wins Somerset Sports Award

-

A Burnham-On-Sea volunteer has won an award for his work in promoting sport in the area.

Jonathan Smith, 22, was crowned a ‘shine a light volunteering champion’ last year after organising a series of community sports events in the Burnham area.

On Friday night, he was presented with further accolade at the 2014 Somerset Sports Awards, which are run by Somerset Activity & Sports Partnership (SASP) to recognise the efforts of sports volunteers.

Jonathan won the award for organising the best Community Games of the Year.

Jonathan was inspired by his efforts in 2012 with Community Games, and in 2013, he organised four different events in Burnham and was also named Somerset’s Community Games Shining Light, one of 70 Shining Lights across England.

The awards are organised by the Community Games legacy programme, funded by the Social Action Fund and delivered by the County Sports Partnership Network (CSPN) and the YMCA.

The campaign started one year on from the original London 2012 Olympic torch relay, and as the campaign progressed round the route, a new Shining Light from within each community was recognised for their efforts.

“Jonathan attended the awards ceremony in London and was an excellent ambassador on the day, showing that young people can really make a difference in their community,” said a spokeswoman.

Jonathan, who overcame cancer at the age of 10, has organised several Community Games in Burnham-On-Sea and is currently helping to organise a summer youth event in Burnham.
