Two high-achieving awards have been presented to Burnham Sea Cadets by the Mayor of Burnham and Highbridge, Cllr Martin Cox.

The first award saw Able Cadet Melanie Severe, pictured, being appointed as the Mayor’s official Cadet for the coming year.

Commanding Officer Lt Bob Silverthorne said: “Able Cadet Severe will do the Mayor and the unit proud on every occasion.”

The second award saw the unit being presented with a Burgee, a top award given to the highest achieving Sea Cadet units across the entire UK.

Each year, every unit must undergo an inspection by the Royal Navy and is assessed on matters of health and safety, admin, performance and qualifications gained over the previous 12 months.

This is the fifth Burgee in a row the unit has now been awarded. The Commanding Officer, Lt Bob Silverthorne said: “Each and every one of my staff and cadets are volunteers and it takes a lot to maintain and upkeep the reports that are necessary to keep the cadets and staff safe whilst at the same time ensuring they enjoy their evening and weekends with us.”

“Being recognised for this work with a Burgee is a great achievement and I thank all of the staff and cadets at the unit for the last year of hard work. Here’s to the next 12 months.”

The unit is based in Cassis Close, Burnham and is open to 10-12 year olds on Thursday evenings from 7-9pm and 12-18 Year olds on a Monday and Thursday from 7-9.30pm. For more details call 01278 781028, email bobsilverthorne15@gmail.com or drop in a parade night.
