New group targets speeding motorists along busy Burnham road

A new group has been formed in Burnham-On-Sea this week to help crackdown on speeding motorists.

The new speedwatch group has begun operating in Berrow Road after securing funding for new speed-monitoring equipment.

"We got funding to purchase a new device and have organised three volunteers to run the scheme," said Community Beat Officer Burnham North PC Ian Bartlett.

"On their first day this week, the group managed to monitor over 460 vehicles in just one hour and found just two vehicles travelling over the speed limit," he added.

Community Speedwatch is a scheme designed to educate motorists about their speed and is designed to reduce road traffic accidents. It is run by volunteers but supported by Avon and Somerset Constabulary.

Burnham Police are encouraging others to start similar schemes in the area and anyone wanting more information should contact the police team by calling the non-emergency number 101.
