Sedgemoor District Council is to begin legal proceeedings against a group of travellers who have pitched up on Burnham’s seafront lawns.

The council has started action after concerns from local residents were raised about the three caravans located on the South Esplanade lawns near the town’s Yacht Club, pictured here.

They arrived on Saturday afternoon and have remained in place ever since, although one of the vans has moved to an area of grass nearby.

Sedgemoor District Council spokeswoman Sam Taylor told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We have served notice on two of the three traveller caravans.”

“One is not on our property, so we can’t take action against all three.”

They were given until Tuesday morning to leave or legal action would be started – however none of them moved on and the council will therefore be going to court this Friday.

Several residents had contacted the council to seek their removal. One resident, Paul Hambleton, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We are concerned by the arrival of the caravans. It’s not good for tourism when visitors and walkers see them parked up along our seafront like this.”
