High tides warning as storm waves drench Burnham seafront watchers

Wave watchers in Burnham-On-Sea are being urged not to put their safety at risk this week when a series of high tides are due.

The warning comes as big waves whipped up by the former Hurricane Bertha crashed onto Burnham's seafront on Sunday evening (August 10th).

Crowds of people watched the storm waves splashing over the sea wall onto The Esplanade, as pictured here.

But with further high tides and strong winds expected over the next few days, visitors have been warned to stay safe.

A spokesman for Burnham's BARB Search & Rescue, which operates two rescue hovercrafts, advised caution. "Strong onshore winds and high tides are creating potentially dangerous conditions this week."

"The force of surging water or breaking waves can easily knock people over and quickly drag them out of their depth."

"Our advice is always to respect the water, and watch the shore from a safe distance, never putting yourself in danger."

Tide times in Burnham-On-Sea are featured here with several 12m high tides due on Tuesday and Wednesday.
