Young Burnham-On-Sea singers hit a high note at Weston Arts Festival

-

A group of young singers from Burnham-On-Sea struck a chord with judges at the Weston Junior Arts Festival.

Burnham Youth Choir performed an impressive medley from The Lion King which gained them a gold medal.

“They all sang with great confidence and filled The Victoria Methodist church in Weston with their wonderful harmonies. It was great to see a group work together so well which was mentioned by the adjudicator,” said the group’s leader Siobhan Johnson.

Rachel Perry, 16, started the solo performances by singing ‘Over the Rainbow’ by Eva Cassidy and gained a well deserved silver medal and a mark of distinction.

“She was personally commended by the adjudicator for her professionalism and beautiful rendition of what is a technically difficult song and fought off stiff competition in her class,” added Siobhan.

Tom Llywarch, 15, sang a moving version of ‘Can you feel the Love Tonight’ from The Lion King, and gained a silver medal and a mark of distinction.

“He filled the church with his beautifully strong baritone voice and competed in a very large class of singers where the standard was exceptionally high, receiving outstanding feedback from the adjudicator,” said Siobhan.

And Lauren Boase, 11, sang superbly to gain a silver medal and a mark of distinction in what was a very large class full of very talented singers.

“This was Lauren’s first ever festival as a solo singer and she, again, received outstanding feedback from the adjudicator. This was a huge achievement for Lauren as she is my newest member and has only be taking lessons with me for a few weeks and to receive a distinction on her first performance is a truly marvellous accolade,” said Siobhan.

Rachel Perry continued to impress the adjudicator with a beautiful duet with Gracie Wickens-Sweet as they sang ‘Truly Scrumptious’ from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang gaining a gold medal and mark of distinction.

Siobhan said: “I am, as ever, immensely proud of all my singers as they all sang exceptionally well at the festival. They have all continued with their wonderful success from the Highbridge Festival in March and continue to go from strength to strength.”

“The standard at the Weston Festival is always high but this year it was exceptionally high and I am so thrilled for them all as it takes alot of hard work and dedication to reach the level of singing that they all perform at.”

The singers can be seen performing at The Princess Theatre on Sat 28th June 7pm in a ‘Strictly Come Singing’ Show which is an evening of songs from films and musicals. Tickets are available from the Princess Theatre.
