High winds sweep into Burnham area as weather warning is issued

Beach sports enthusiasts took full advantage of strong winds at Brean on Sunday (October 19th) as weather forecasters warned of more blustery conditions over the coming days.

Gusts of up to 40mph were enjoyed by kite surfers, kjite buggy racers and land yachters as the onshore gales created ideal conditions.

More gusty winds are expected to affect the region this week, with the Met Office warning that the former Hurricane Gonzalo will sweep in from the Atlantic, although the west country is not expected to bear the brunt of the storm.

"Gusts exceeding 50 mph are likely, with 60 to 70 mph gusts in exposed coastal areas in the west," says the Met Office. "The public should be aware of the potential for disruption to travel and perhaps some damage to trees."
