Council bosses have this week issued a warning about the dangers of swimming in the lakes at Highbridge’s Apex Wildlife Park.

It follows several incidents during recent days when young people have been cooling off by swimming in the lakes.

Sedgemoor District Council spokeswoman Claire Faun told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We have been advised of recent incidents of swimming and the misuse of safety equipment taking place.”

“We would like to remind all park users that the lake is not a suitable or safe swimming environment and swimming is prohibited in the lake at all times.”

She added: “The lake has little easy access in and out, has unknown depth and slippery surfaces, is a haven for wildlife and marine plants, including many plants where feet can easily get tangled. The lake is a former clay pit and is inappropriate in terms of swimming water quality.”

“Safety aids are also for emergency-use only and should not be used/touched unless it is an emergency. Whilst safety equipment is regularly checked by Sedgemoor District Council staff, non-emergency use increases the risk of safety equipment being unavailable/damaged when an emergency takes place.”

Park users who spot safety equipment missing or damaged should contact the district council on 01278 435435.
