Scores of Basset Hound enthusiasts head to Burnham-On-Sea beach

Scores of Basset Hounds inundated Burnham-On-Sea's beach on Sunday (February 1st) for a unique annual event.

It was the 72nd outing for the Basset Hound Walkers, a west country group dedicated to enjoying Bassets.

Every month the group meets to undertake a walk anywhere from Exmouth to North Wiltshire.

Sunday's walk started from Apex Park and then along the beach to the wooden lighthouse, a four mile stroll.

"Despite the bitter wind this was one of the best turn-outs for the group and all enjoyed the many chases," said organiser Dave Patten told

The group was started by Dave seven years ago as he felt the breed was deteriorating to a show ring specimen.

"The Basset Hound is an ancient breed - mentioned by Shakespeare - bred to hunt, but sadly all too many hounds now can barely waddle round the garden with shrunken legs and being overweight. A fit Basset should be able to walk 10 miles a day with no problem," he added.

More details can be found on the website together with videos of the walks and lots of practical advice on looking after a Basset Hound.
