War veteran's VIP dog at Burnham-On-Sea nursing home passes away

A 'VIP' dog has died this week at a Burnham-On-Sea nursing home where staff had looked after him for five years since his owner died in 2010.

Bob, a black Labrador, became a resident at Burnham Lodge Nursing Home after his owner, Burnham war veteran Harold Pursey, died there in 2010.

Since the death of Harold, the nursing home's staff, residents and social worker had worked hard to raise funds to keep a trust fund topped up for Bob's ongoing veterinary fees and food. As a result, the dog's story was featured several times in the national press.

Lindsay Hammond at Burnham Nursing Home told this week: "It is with much sadness that we announce the death of Bob. He was put to sleep on Monday 28th December, just a few weeks before his 16th birthday. He was a much-loved member of our family at Burnham Lodge and it was a very sad day for the staff and residents. It is truly the end of an era."

"The media response has always been amazing and heart warming, knowing how many people wanted updates on Bob and also donated so generously to his trust fund."

At one point two years ago, the nursing home's staff issued an appeal for funds when it emerged the dog's funds had almost run out. As we reported here, it prompted a fundraising fishing contest that raised over £2,000.
