VIPs join 250 guests at fundraising cancer charity ball near Burnham

Over 250 people – including two VIPs – attended a formal ball near Burnham-On-Sea on Saturday evening (December 5th) to raise funds for a breast cancer support charity.

The annual Somerset Breast Cancer Now Ball, held at the Batch Country House in Lympsham, had a movie theme this year and guests rose to the challenge by attending in fun costumes.

Several VIP guests were among the audience, including the former athlete Donna Fraser, a four-time Olympian and double World Championship medallist.

Donna has herself beaten Breast Cancer after having a mastectomy. She said: “I’m delighted to be supporting such a special cause – it was great to see so many people coming together to support the charity.”

Richard Caddell, from ITV’s Sooty and Sweep Show, was also in the audience and said he was keen to be supporting such a good cause.

Holly Macbeth, from Breakthrough Breast Cancer Somerset, said the evening had been a huge success. “We are delighted with how it’s gone and thank everyone for their huge support,” she said.

There was an emotional moment early in the evening when Holly informed the audience that her mother Christine is herself battling cancer. A photo was flashed up on the event’s screen of Christine in happier times attending a previous fundraising event with Holly and Donna.

Among those attending were Burnham’s former MP, Tessa Munt, and her partner David who are long-running supporters of the charity.

Guests came in a range of fun costumes to support the Hollywood theme of this year’s ball.

The Wizard of Oz inspired one couple’s costume theme to help raise cash for the charity.

Burnham’s DanceFit group performed at the event on Saturday evening.
