Nationwide cycle race to pass through the Burnham area this week

Dozens of cyclists will be passing through Burnham-On-Sea, Highbridge, Berrow and Brean this week during a nationwide cycle event.

The Countrywide Great Tour is a 64-day circumnavigation of the coastline of Britain by bicycle, never losing the sight, the sound or the smell of the sea.

The 6,800 kilometre cycle ride began on 4th July and finishes on 5th September.

Stage 53 on Tuesday 25th August will see the cyclists pedalling 115 kilometres from Porlock Weir to Weston, coming through Highbridge, Burnham, Berrow and Brean on the way.

They are scheduled to finish in Weston at 4.30pm so will be passing through our area in the mid-afternoon.

“With the stage starting in Porlock, the route is relatively flat with a only a few medium climbs to contend with as it heads away from Exmoor,” says a spokesman.

“The riders will cross the River Parrett before heading north through Burnham-On-Sea and Berrow towards Weston.”

A core group of 40 cyclists is riding the whole event whilst being joined daily by corporate, charity and day riders, building numbers up to 200.

The cyclists are on a clockwise circumnavigation of the UK, taking in every seaside town, city and coastal village that mainland Britain has to offer.

The Countrywide Great Tour is being put on in tandem with CTC, a national cycling charity, and is sponsored by the Daily Telegraph. The full route map is here.
