Highbridge residents look set to go to the polls later this autumn to elect a new town councillor.

Burnham-On-Sea.com reported earlier this month that a vacancy had arisen following the resignation of Cllr Dawn Malloy for personal reasons.

Sedgemoor District Council spokeswoman Claaire Faun told Burnham-On-Sea.com this week: “We were informed by Burnham and Highbridge Town Council that there had been a resignation in the Highbridge Parish ward.”

“We had to advertise the vacancy, giving 14 working days form the date that the notice of vacancy was signed for. We received 10 signatures to request an election.”

“The next step is to choose an election date which will be set within 60 working days of the date of the notice of the vacancy and at the discretion of the Returning Officer and to publish a notice of election which will officially start the process of being able to accept nomination papers.”

“There would only be an election if we received more nomination papers than there are vacancies, in this instance more than one. If we don’t then that person would be duly elected.”
