Busy year of events in Burnham-On-Sea unveiled by local groups

A busy programme of more than 70 public events has been uneviled in Burnham-On-Sea this week by local organisers.

Burnham’s new 2015 programme of events is available to download here and was unveiled during a meeting of event organisers on Monday (January 5th), overseen by Burnham’s Tourism Manager Ian Jefferies and Town Centre Manager Beverley Milner Simonds.

Among Burnham’s new events in 2015 will be a series of Vintage & Artisan outdoor markets to be held in Burnham’s town centre on summer Sundays.

A unique new family event will also be the World Paper Aeroplane Championships, to be held for the first time in Burnham High Street on June 21st!

Scores of family events are also set to be held over the next 12 months on the beach, in the town centre and in local parks for residents and visitors.

Highbridge’s long-running Festival of the Arts will be held at The Princess Theatre in Burnham from 5th-10th March.

The 68th annual event, right, will see hundreds of entries from across the south west competing in dance, speech and drama and music.

Burnham’s Beer Festival returns to the town’s Ritz Social Club from 1-4 May, and there will also be a May Day Celebration at Marine Cove on May 4th.

Two Burnham Food & Drink Festivals will be held during 2015, on 23 May and on October 31st. And a series of new Vintage & Artisan Markets will be held in Burnham town centre on 21st June, 19th July, 16th August and 20th September.

Dozens of classic vehicles will return to Burnham during the popular Vale of Avalon Vintage Road Run on the seafront on June 6th.

For children, Burnham’s Youth Day and Parade will be held on the town’s beach on 27th June. There will also be a fun-packed Backalong Avalon Day on the beach on 19th July, plus a Teddy Bears Picnic in Marine Cove on July 22nd, and a Pirate Day on 29th August.

Highbridge’s hugely-popular annual Sedgemoor Play Day will be held at Apex Park on 5th August.

Making a return splash will be Burnham’s annual Stert Island Sea Swim, which will be held on 9th August, the same day as the annual ‘Escape Day’ emergency services day on the seafront, run by BARB.

Burnham’s Town Centre Manager and the Chamber of Trade will also be organising a new event called ‘A Night On The Town’ in the High Street on 14th August to promote town centre firms.

Music and fun for all tastes will be on offer during Burnham’s annual Folkfest when it returns from 3rd-6th September.

And the summer season will be rounded off with a Kite Festival on Burnham’s beach on 12-13 September, and Brean’s Country & Western Music Festival from 23rd September-4th October.

The 2015 Highbridge and Burnham Carnival Weekend will be get underway with a dazzling fireworks display on the beach on 8th November, ahead of the big parade through town on November 9th. Burnham-On-Sea’s 2015 Christmas Lights Switch-On – to be overseen by Burnham Chamber of Trade – will take place on Saturday 21st November.

Monday’s meeting of event organisers was jointly organised by Ian Jefferies and Beverley Milner Simonds, pictured, who said they are delighted at the schedule.

Beverly said: “It’s really good to see such enthusiasm from the organisers of a wide range of events being planned for Burnham this year. It looks like being an exciting year for residents and visitors.”

Ian added: “Monday’s meeting was successful and productive – we had a good turnout of organisers and it’s great that everyone is pooling together their expertise.”
