A special limousine tour through town and a civic reception was held for Burnham-On-Sea’s newly-crowned world darts champion Gary Anderson on Saturday (January 17th).

Gary beat the 16-time world champion Phil Taylor to become PDC World Darts Champion earlier this month, delighting fans across the country.

To celebrate the accomplishment, Burnham and Highbridge’s Mayor Martin Cox held a special Civic Reception and limousine drive through the two towns.

The Mayor told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We’re very proud of Gary, who lives here in Burnham, and I wanted to recognise his tremendous win with a limo tour and formal reception attended by local darts players. It went really well – it was a very enoyable event.”

Gary was driven through Burnham and Highbridge in a white long-stretch limousine before the reception itself.

A crowd of fans also gathered outside the theatre where the champion greeted them on his arrival, signing autographs and posing for photos.

Over 50 people – including scores of darts players from local teams and leagues – attended the reception at The Princess.

One of the fans at the event was Marian Corkhill, 79, right, who was delighted to meet Gary.

“I am a huge fan of the game and Gary’s win has made my year,” she told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

“I am so proud that he lives here in Burnham and it’s great that we’re celebrating it with him.”

Gary said he was “really chuffed” with the turnout and thanked all those who had come along. “It’s been great to meet some local players and hopefully this will encourage more to get into the game.”
