Here comes the sun! 80°F heatwave arrives in Burnham-On-Sea

-

The Burnham-On-Sea area looks set to see some of its hottest days of the year this week when a heatwave arrives.

The Met Office says thermometers could today (Tuesday) reach 27C (80.6F) – which is far hotter than the local average of 20.9C (67F) at this time of the year.

The Met Office is forecasting heatwave conditions, and has declared a level 2 heat health alert.

The warning is triggered when the Met Office forecasts there is a 60 per cent or higher chance of temperatures being high enough for two days to have a significant effect on health.

The hot weather for the Burnham area is likely to continue into the weekend, while thunderstorms are also possible.

Trudi Grant, Director of Public Health at Somerset County Council, said: “While many of us look forward to warm summer weather, heatwaves do come with a health warning.”

“The health effects of intense heat can come on very quickly. So please enjoy the sunshine, but do so safely, and keep an eye on anyone you know who might be struggling to cope. Make sure they are keeping their home cool, drinking plenty of water and not doing any strenuous activity, particularly avoiding the sun during the hottest part of the day.”
