A brave Burnham-On-Sea pensioner who abseiled down Clifton Gorge to raise funds for the town’s Hillview Carnival Club has handed over more than £900 to the group this week.

Mary Nicholson, 80, helped to set up Hillview Carnival Club 41 years ago and says she wanted to do something special to celebrate the organisation’s fourth decade.

She told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “My grandchildren gave me the abseil down Clifton Gorge as a daring present for my 80th birthday and I did it in August and loved it – I hope to do a wing walk next!”

“I have always been a bit of an intrepid person who loves challenges. That’s just me – it’s the way I have always been!”

She presented the sponsorshop fees to Hillview’s Treasurer Lynn Burland this week at Burnham’s Lighthouse Inn alongside Bar Manager Mandy Pike.

The club’s young members also gathered there for one of their final dress rehearsals before the carnival season gets underway this weekend.

Burnham-On-Sea’s Hillview Carnival Club will be showing its Christmas-themed float, called ‘It’s A Cracker’, featured a giant Santa and snowman plus scores of festive-themed moving parts for the first time at Bridgwater Carnival this Saturday and then Burnham-On-Sea Carnival on Monday.
