Burnham-On-Sea Hospital’s Minor Injuries Unit saw an increase in patients over the Christmas holidays – but not the huge surge experienced by some other hospitals in the region.

Victoria Eld from Somerset Partnership NHS Foundation Trust said the workload at Burnham Minor Injuries Unit was slightly up overall.

“The biggest impact was the weekend between Christmas and New Year when 46 patients were seen within eight hours – four hours on Saturday and four hours on Sunday,” she told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

“The extra demand was met and safely managed by the emergency nurse practitioners. Waiting times did reflect the increased demand.”

“There was an increase in referrals from NHS111 and it is reported that some patients with non-life threatening conditions elected to leave Weston General emergency department and attend Burnham.”
