Burnham’s Christmas skating rink to open a week earlier than planned

-

A Christmas skating rink in Burnham-On-Sea is set to open a week earlier than originally planned, the organisers have said this week.

The rink will be open to the public from Saturday December 5th through to January 2nd in Burnham’s Lynton Road car park, extending the period that it is operational to a whole month from the three weeks that were first announced.

The organisers from Burnham Events Social Team (BEST) were last month successful in their bid to secure a £16,000 grant from the Town Council to enable the skating rink to go ahead, as we first reported here.

The rink will be able to take up to 25 skaters at a time and will be lit to allow evening skating sessions. It will be open for seven hours a day and skating will cost £4.

Kathy Jones, Chairman of BEST, told Burnham-On-Sea.com this week: “BEST are delighted to be opening the rink earlier than originally planned at no extra cost, extending the festive season in Burnham, and giving people more opportunities to use the rink. We would to thank everyone involved again for their help and I would like to thank the BEST team for all their hard work.”

The rink is made of artificial or synthetic ice which the manufacturers Ice Magic say is like real ice except it doesn’t melt and in all aspects has the same properties of ice albeit with a lubricant that is used to keep the surface slippery.

Ordinary ice skates can be used and the surface allows for all the potential stops, turns, twirls and other gymnastics associated with the sport.

Sedgemoor District Council has also given its backing by waiving the rental fees for the group to use part of Lynton Road Car Park for the time that the rink will be operational.
