Petition calls for halt to Isleport Business Park expansion in Highbridge

A petition has been launched online in opposition to proposals to expand a Highbridge business park.

Burnham-On-Sea.com first reported here earlier this month how plans are being drawn up to create the Isleport 2 Business Park.

Sedgemoor District Council has started consultation on the scheme, and said that it could create up to 1,000 new jobs.

However, nearby resident Claire Goldie has started a petition here to halt any future expansion, which it's claimed would be 'detrimental'.

The petition states: "This planned development is strongly linked to Hinkley Point, a nuclear power station. The development of this area will be detrimental to animals and the vast amount of surrounding wildlife that live here."

"Not only will it increase noise pollution, road traffic and human waste, but will create an eye sore upon entering the town of Highbridge."

"This area has already had development and as residents we have all experienced massive increases in traffic which has made it a dangerous area for both elderly and children. Please let's stop this now."

Sedgemoor District Council is considering the long-term expansion of the business park and has identified three potential development sites covering around 65 hectares of land - but says no specific plans have yet been formally submitted.

Among those to have signed the petition is Linda Hogarth, who says: "We do not need another business park as there are enough under-utilised sites in the area and we need to start prioritising the other life systems that we share the planet with."

Another resident, James Clancey, adds: "I live in Highbridge close to this proposed site. The last thing we need is more noise, more traffic and whatever Hinkley Point Nuclear Power Station intend to do which the council will not disclose."
