Burnham-On-Sea young musicians award launched in Jayne’s memory

-

Burnham-On-Sea’s Ritz Acoustic Club has launched a new award scheme this week aimed at young performers.

Mike Price, a member of the Ritz Acoustic Club whose partner Jayne Young died of Motor Neurone Disease, is providing a bursary for the new young musicians award to occur annually for four years.

“Jayne loved music, and this is a fitting tribute to such a wonderful person. Young musicians under 21 years of age, who play acoustic instruments or sing, are invited to apply for the award,” said Mike.

Accepted applicants will be required to perform two songs at three open mic sessions at the Ritz Acoustic Club by May 2016.

Based on their three performances, the applicants will be shortlisted for a final event where the finalists will compete for the award which will provide a monetary voucher of £150 for the winner and £50 for the runner up.

Mike added: “Jayne was concerned that too few young people came to the Acoustic Club, and in life wanted to do something about it but illness counted her out.”

“Accordingly, and following her very premature death as a result of Motor Neurone Disease I, and the club, are trying to encourage young performers to attend through a four year bursary I am funding in her memory.”

“We’re not necessarily talent-scouting, we just want to ensure the future of our great club and at the same time provide a platform for young players to hone their performance skills. The awards are an incentive to turn-up and play.”

Vouchers for winners can be made payable to a particular musical instrument supplier, recording studio, music or voice teacher etc. The winner and runner up will also be able to play an extended set at the Ritz Acoustic Club.

This is a unique opportunity for young musicians and singers. Application forms, together with terms and conditions, can be obtained by email from robthetutor@yahoo.co.uk or shaggy.dog@me.com

Paul Mitchell, Vice Chairman at the club, added: “Jayne was passionate about the great community in Burnham and especially the Ritz Acoustic Club. In life she was a human dynamo who was a great thinker that made things happen. This is a very poignant award in her memory and I would like to thank those who have helped to get set this up, especially Rob Brown, who has been very supportive.”
