The appearance of Burnham-On-Sea’s “eyesore” job centre building is finally set to be smartened up as it goes on sale for the first time.

The job centre building – which has been empty for almost seven years – has been available to lease but is now going on sale in a fresh bid to find a new owner.

The Department for Work and Pensions vacated the former Burnham Jobcentre at the corner of the High Street and Regent Street on 31st January 2009 and handed the building over to Telereal Trillium. The lease expires on 31st December 2018.

Burnham’s Town Centre Manager Bev Milner Simonds, right, told Burnham-On-Sea.com this week: “I have been in discussions with Telereal Trillium for the past year to encourage them to market the property more aggressively to find a new occupant and to put pressure on them to clean it up.”

“I have recently visited the building with the agents and saw the poor state of the interior. I put pressure on them to appoint a more local agent to let the property and to get a sale. I’m pleased to say that the building is now up for sale for the first time.”

“They have also agreed to remove the triangular letting sign outside, which adds to the eyesore, and it will be marketed online instead.”

“The two-tone fascia boards will also be painted to clean up the front of the property and it’s hoped that vinyls will be applied to the windows to smarten up its appearance.”

She added: “The building is a massive eyesore at the northern end of Burnham High Street and our approach has always been to try and move it on to a new owner.”

This is good news, but obviously the best news would be to have it occupied by a new owner.”
