Liberal Democrats in the Burnham-On-Sea area have congratulated Tim Farron on his election as the party’s leader.

Despite a difficult general election for the party, resulting in the loss of MP Tessa Munt, right, local support for the Liberal Democrats has increased, claims the party.

Commenting, Tessa Munt said: “Tim is a brilliant campaigner and he will help inspire a new generation of liberals to campaign for social justice and hold the Conservatives to account in government.”

“We have already seen where the Conservatives’ priorities lie; protecting the well-off whilst turning young people and the vulnerable into second-class citizens.”

“With the Labour party endorsing most of the Government’s policies, only the Liberal Democrats will stand up for common decency in our society.”

“Tim’s background speaks for itself. He is someone who actually understands people. He’s a devoted father of four children, went to his local state school and college, held down a regular job and is certainly not a member of the traditional political class.”

“I very much look forward to working with him as our leader.”

Local party chair Rosemary Hasler added: “My congratulations to Tim on his win and a fine campaign. The Lib Dem fightback can now truly begin.”

“Here in Somerset, we have seen many people join the Lib Dems and get involved in local campaigns and events. We hope Tim’s victory will inspire many more people to join up and get involved.”

Anyone wishing to get involved with the local Lib Dems, who have started campaigning to win seats on the County Council in 2017 and the Parliamentary seat in 2020, are invited to contact the local party.
