Mean vandals have caused hundreds of pounds of damage by attacking lifeguards equipment on Berrow beach since the start of July.

The RNLI says there have been two incidents in recent weeks where their huts have been damaged.

Police have stepped up patrols in the area and residents and visitors are being asked to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity by calling 101 or calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

“On the first occasion, 11th July, the lifeguards found the padlock had been smashed off their board bin and the lid had been twisted and damaged during an attempt to force it open,” a spokeswoman told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

“Also, the window had been cracked, the flag pole snapped and taken off the side of the hut and thrown down the beach.”

“The vandals had attempted to gain access to the hut through a storage area. They had also undone nuts and bolts holding the balcony to the hut.”

In a second incident on 17th July someone used bolt cutters to snap the locks on the RNLI’s board bin and then steal padlocks.

“In total, there has been quite a substantial cost to the damage, which is billed to our charity.”
