Council is ‘confident that Burnham Morrisons site won’t be empty long’

-

Sedgemoor District Council says it is “confident” that the site of Burnham-On-Sea’s Morrisons supermarket on the town’s seafront will not be vacant for very long.

The supermarket announced on Thursday that the Pier Street store is proposed to close as part of a cost-cutting move.

Claire Faun, Corporate Relations Manager at Sedgemoor District Council, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We are disappointed that Morrisons in Burnham has been selected for closure. The Council’s Economic Development Team were in touch with the company as soon as the news broke and offered their help, alongside Job Centre Plus.”

“SDC is confident that the site, in its prime location, will not be vacant for too long. The Economic Development Team will be talking with Morrisons and local partners to ascertain future plans.”

She added: “The site is not owned by Sedgemoor District Council. Sedgemoor sold the site of the store building to Gateway in 1990. The car park is partly owned by Sedgemoor directly and part leased by Sedgemoor from the company who own site.”
