Dozens of people lined Burnham-On-Sea’s High Street on Shrove Tuesday to watch a series of pancake races featuring local businesses and groups.

Fourteen teams representing local businesses and groups battled it out to win an engraved silver frying pan during the inaugural town centre event.

Cheered on by the crowds, the teams completed a series of heats with Saxons Estate Agents winning the coveted top spot, and Gemini Tae Kwon Do winning a special prize for showing the best pancake tossing skills!

Town Centre Manager Beverley Milner Simonds, who organised the event, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “I’m over the moon with how it went – it was great to see the High Street so busy in the sunshine. The teams put a lot of effort into it and entertained the crowds with some great races. We will definitely be back again next year!”

Mayor Martin Cox, who watched the event, added: “It was great to see such team spirit and good humour on show. We had a worthy winner after an exciting final race. Congratulations to the winners and Bev for organising such a super event which I am sure will become a popular annual tradition for Burnham.”

Teams competing included Avalon Insurance, Burnham Baptist Church, Burnham Food & Drink Festival, Burnham Swim and Sports Academy, Chatterbox Cafe, Gemini Tae Kwon Do, Larkins 99p Store, Saxons Estate Agents, St Andrew’s Church, The Children’s Society, The Pet Shop and The Ritz Cinema.
