Dozens of residents have this week welcomed the decision by Somerset County Council to axe controversial plans to introduce new parking restrictions for motorists in Berrow.
158 people signed a petition against the unpopular proposals for Rugosa Drive and Rosetree Paddock next to the village school.
This week, a spokesman for Somerset County Council confirmed to Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The proposed changes were always subject to feedback from the public and we were very pleased to receive such a response from the local community in Berrow. Now the objection period has closed, we have arranged for the proposals in Berrow to be deleted from the Traffic Order.”
Berrow Parish Council Chairman Kew welcomed the news, and told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “This is very good news – the extra double yellow lines would have caused real problems to many parents in the mornings and afternoons.”
“They also would have stopped deliveries to homes and created parking problems in other parts of Berrow.”
However, the County Council says the proposed new parking and waiting restrictions will be introduced in Burnham-On-Sea’s Regent Street, Stoddens Road and Southern Lea Road.
And in Highbridge, there will be waiting restrictions in Burnham Road, Worston Road, Huntspill Road, King Street and Tyler Way.
“There are various reasons behind the mixture of proposed changes to some on-street parking, stopping, waiting, loading and unloading restrictions,” added the council. “Some of these proposals are the result of residents’ concerns over parking, while others are to deter motorists from parking for safety reasons, for example where they obscure visibility at junctions.”
