A new record total of £28,500 has been raised in Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge for the Royal British Legion during the town’s annual Poppy Appeal.

Generous residents in the Burnham area have dug deep to donate to the appeal by buying thousands of poppies during recent weeks.

Burnham Poppy Appeal collectors have this week thanked all those who gave and supported this year’s fundraising.

Organiser Ruth Crosby, pictured, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “It’s been the biggest collection on record in Burnham and Highbridge – the towns have done themselves proud.”

“The total for this year’s appeal reached a brilliant £28,500. It’s an absolutely fantastic figure that shows the strong support for the Poppy Appeal locally.”

“We have been overwhelmed by the generous response – from the general public, schools, businesses and groups.”

Ruth added: “Collections from customers at local supermarkets were particularly strong – Tesco raised £5,968, Asda raised £4,723, Lidl raised £4,251 and Morrisons raised £2,443.”

“A big thank you goes to all our wonderful collectors, the people who helped to collect the donations, and count the money, and to the public for their generosity in supporting us.”

“There were many fantastic collectors again this year for whom we are hugely grateful, with Mike Mansfield deserving a special mention for collecting £800 alone. The Army Cadets and Rotary Club were also superb this year, putting in many hours of collecting.”

“A lot of hard work goes into this each year by many people but it is clearly very much worth it and we thank everyone for their support.”
