Disruptive roadworks ‘hit visitor numbers in Burnham town centre’

The decision to allow disruptive roadworks to go ahead in Burnham-On-Sea during one of the busiest holiday weeks of the summer has been criticised this week.

Berrow Road has been partially shut for gas main works by Wales and West Utilities since last Thursday, causing long queues of traffic in both directions for the past few days.

And nearby Stoddens Road is also shut during the daytime between Tuesday and Thursday this week for road resurfacing work.

Town Centre Manager Beverley Milner Simonds told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “I am disappointed that Somerset Highways have not better managed the works by Wales and West in Berrow Road and the resurfacing on Stoddens Road.”

“Whilst both works were necessary neither were an emergency. The lack of visible planning or management of these works has had a knock on for Burnham-On-Sea traders with footfall down on what should be some of the busiest trading days of the year.”

A Burnham Chamber of Trade spokesperson said that the timing of the work was “very regrettable” and added that the group had contacted Somerset Highways to formally raise the concerns to try and prevent further issues.
