road sign near Burnham-On-Sea has finally been fiexd after a two
year wait and consultation with 22 separate organisations!
sign lay hidden in the undergrowth while Somerset County Council
consulted with 22 bodies to repair it.
issue was highlighted by Burnham's MP Tessa Munt in December when
she talked to residents about road safety issues.
was revealed the council had consulted with National Grid, Network
Rail, Bristol Waterworks, Virgin Media, Wales & West Utilities
and mobile phone companies Orange and Vodafone about having it
sign even became a topic of debate in Parliament when House of
Commons leader William Hague described the situation as "barmy".
questioned how many other situations of "waste and inefficiency"
were taking place throughout Somerset. A council spokesman explained
that the reason the sign wasnt replaced quicker was "because
it has no road safety benefit and has had to wait while we do
things that we have to consider higher priority."
father and son team Andrew and Josh Luke from a local council
contractor have now clipped the sign back up over the past week.
motorist noted, however, that strangely the distances on the new
sign have changed even though it's at the same location!
