Newly-formed Burnham rowing club takes to the water for first time

A new Cornish Pilot Gig Rowing Club in Burnham-On-Sea has held its first row this week.

The group - which was formed last month - held its first row in Bristol Docks on Saturday morning (September 12th).

With the help of Clevedon Gig Club, 11 of he club's rowers took two gigs out for over an hour.

"Without exception the gig rowing community has been keen to help our efforts to start a gig club and Clevedon have been particularly supportive," said Dave Wrennall, Sailing Club Commodore.

"The Clevedon instructors were most impressed by how quickly the mixed crews were working well together and rated them as well above average for a first row."

"This is the first in a series of rows in sheltered waters to provide experience and training over the coming months in preparation for us owning our own boat and rowing regularly on the River Brue in the new year."

"The Burnham Sailing Club President David Humphries joined the crews on the water and said the only way to really appreciate this sport is to try it, and when we have our own boat we hope lots of local people will want to join us and have a go for themselves."
