Crowds lined Burnham-On-Sea’s seafront to watch 77 swimmers take part in the town’s annual Stert Island Swim on Sunday (August 9th).

The 2km sea swim was won by Bristol swimmer Michal Kotlewski in a fast time of 24 minutes and 14 seconds.

Michal, right, a lifeguard, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “I’m delighted to have won – I’ve trained specially for this event over several months. They were great conditions for the swim.”

Burnham’s Mayor, Michael Clarke, officially started the event from the north side of the jetty after the location was changed due to rocks emerging from part of the sands on the south side.

Celia Miall from West Country Triathletes, which oversees the annual race, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “It was a very successful event – we had a good turnout of spectators and swimmers and good swimming conditions. Thanks goes to everyone for their help.”

Co-organiser Martin Rogers added: “The new course worked well – it’s better for the swimmers who get out into the estuary quicker and there are fewer clashes. We thank the Town Council for all their help in helping to finance the event.”

The event was held in memory of a regular swimmer, Martin Lee, who has sadly passed away since last year’s event – as we reported here.
