Former Middle East hostage Terry Waite to speak in Burnham-On-Sea

Former Middle East hostage Terry Waite will be visiting Burnham-On-Sea in September to discuss his experiences.

St Andrew’s Church will be welcoming Mr Waite on Wednesday 9th September.

Mr Waite was the Assistant for Anglican Communion Affairs for the then Archbishop of Canterbury, Robert Runcie, in the 1980s.

As an envoy for the Church of England, he travelled to Lebanon to try to secure the release of four hostages, including the journalist John McCarthy, but he was himself kidnapped and held captive from 1987 to 1991.

Rev Graham Witts told "Terry Waite will be speaking on the situation in the Middle East, from the personal experience he had when he was held captive for 1,763 days. He will also be speaking about the modern state of affairs in the Middle East."

"He will also be signing copies of his books during the interval which will be followed by a question and answer session on his talk."

During the evening there will also be a musical interlude by the Coastline Singers.

The event, starting at 7.30pm, will be free but there will be a retiring collection for St Andrew’s Restoration Fund and Hostage UK, the charity of which Terry is a patron.

The evening is part of the events to mark the 700th anniversary of St Andrew’s Church.
