Workers at a Highbridge firm have paid tribute to a colleague who was killed in a horrific crash on the A38 in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Lewis Rogers, right, known to friends and family as ‘Lew’, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash at the A38 Dunball roundabout.

Members of his family have expressed their grief at his death, and thanked witnesses who tried in vain to save Mr Rogers before paramedics arrived.

Mr Rogers only recently started work at BFP Wholesale, a national bakery ingredient wholesaler, on Highbridge’s Isleport Business Park.

Its Operations Director Ed Rowlands said this week: “All our thoughts and support are with his family at this time. It’s very difficult, especially at this time of the year.”

“Lewis had not been with us for very long, but was a genuinely valued member of the team working to improve the Highbridge depot, who had made quite an impression with us in the short time he had been there.”

“He was very much part of the team and we’re all feeling his loss and we really feel for his family,” he added.

Mr Rogers was a rear-seat passenger in a BMW which crashed through the Dunball roundabout at around 1.10am on Sunday morning.

The car skidded across the roundabout and hit a tree in the centre, which has become a spot for floral tributes this week.

The other passenger in the back seat suffered life-changing injuries.

Police said the two men in the front of the BMW initially tried to escape from the scene. Both were arrested after failing breath tests. They have been released on police bail pending further inquiries.

The BMW was removed by police in the hours after the crash for forensic examination.

A police spokesman said they wanted to hear from anyone who saw the crash, or the car being driven towards Bridgwater early on Sunday morning at around 1am.

“We are keen to trace anyone who was in the area at the time who may have seen the incident or helped at the scene following the collision,” he said.

“Anyone able to help is asked to contact the collision investigation unit on the force number 101, quoting ref CI/277/15-3528.”
