Residents raise safety fears for Burnham's Tuckers Garage site

The owner of Burnham-On-Sea's former Tuckers Garage site has this week been urged to secure it amid residents' concerns for safety after groups of youngsters have begun gathering there.

Town councillor Kate Lawson told a council meeting on Monday that the former garage site in Victoria Street, pictured, has become a hang-out for young people.

"Unfortunately, it's being used by young people playing loud music and also as a skate park, disturbing nearby residents," she said.

Local resident Alex Turco told councillors: "There is a safety issue there - the council should be petitioning Sedgemoor to ask the land owner to shut the site."

"The children have been setting fires there, even though it's a former petrol station and the tanks are still in the soil."

"I won't go as far as saying it's an accident waiting to happen, but the land owner has a responsibility - they have planning permission to develop it - and they must secure the site."

Property developer Abracore was last year given the go-ahead to build 35 'retirement apartments' in two blocks of three-storey buildings at the site.

It was previously occupied by Tucker's Garage and petrol station, which was demolished eight years ago, as featured here.
