A rush hour van blaze on the M5 motorway at Burnham-On-Sea caused tailbacks for commuters on Wednesday morning (May 20th).

Burnham-On-Sea and Bridgwater fire crews were called to the southbound carriageway shortly before 7am.

“Several calls were received to reports of a vehicle fire just after junction 22 of the M5,” said a spokesman.

“One fire appliance from Burnham and one from Bridgwater were mobilised to the incident and crews found the van on the hard shoulder well alight.”

“Crews extinguished the fire using breathing apparatus and a hose reel jet. Cutting equipment was used to gain access to the back of the vehicle.”

The van was destroyed by fire and the cause was accidental – there were no injuries.
