Vandals can’t halt successful West Huntspill Scarecrow Festival

-

Overnight vandalism saw one scarecrow stolen and another damaged during a village festival near Burnham-On-Sea at the weekend, but the festival still went ahead and was hailed a success by organisers.

Scarecrows of all shapes and sizes appeared along West Huntspill roadsides and front gardens, raising a smile for passers-by.

Organiser said one scarecrow, a nurse-themed character, had been stolen over the weekend.

Karen and Darren Scott were also shocked to wake up on Sunday morning to find vandals had damaged their straw-filled grim reaper next to the A38.

“It was very disappaointing that someone decided to badly damage our scarecrow when so much effort had been put in by the family,” said Karen.

“They pulled off the head, broke the woodwork and made other damage but we got to work on some swift repairs to get it back on show.”

Judging of the artistic creations took place on Sunday afternoon (20th September) when the top scarecrows won their owners a prize.

Top honours for the residential prize went to Alan Higgs and family for their RNLI-themed scarecrow. And the best business scarecrow went to Laburnum House for its Cadburys Roses Grow on You character.
