Dozens of people from across Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge have donated more than 250 boxes of Christmas gifts for needy children in Albania.

Burnham Baptist Church, together with St Andrew’s School, Berrow School and King Alfred School, have collected the shoeboxes which contain small gifts for the Albanian children to unwrap in the run up to Christmas.

Reverend Steve Ayers from Burnham Baptist Church, who is co-ordinating the project, will be setting off with a vehicle full of the gifts in late December for the long journey to Albania.

Steve told Burnham-On-Sea.com he has been “overwhelmed” by the response across the Burnham and Highbridge area, saying: “The local community has really pulled together and the response has been fantastic.”

“We will be hand-delivering the gifts to children in Albania, which is one of the poorest countries in Europe. They live in desperately poor conditions and are always so grateful to see us.”

“It’s been a brilliant effort and we are so grateful to everyone who has given gifts this year and worked so hard to make this happen.”
