'Barmy' nine-mile diversion around Burnham roadworks attacked

A small stretch of road in Burnham-On-Sea is scheduled to close for a week's roadworks in March, and motorists will be diverted along a nine-mile alternative route.

Berrow Road will be closed for a week from March 7th from the junction with Allandale Road, northwards for a distance of 170 metres.

"Wessex Water will be carrying out lining of the main foul sewer to address structure and service problems," explaind a spokesman.

While local motorists will use Rectory Road and Stoddens Road to quickly drive around the closed section, Somerset County Council has published its recommended nine mile diversion route that will take traffic out of town to East Brent, as published here and printed below.

Town councillor Phil Harvey told "The diversion is total nonsense for local people since most will use Rectory Road and Stoddens Road to get around the roadworks."

"Diversions like this are caused by government regulations that require the County Council to use similar types of roads, so the closure of an 'A' road requires a diversion route along an alternative 'A' road, and the closure of a 'B' road such as Berrow Road involves diversions along 'A' and 'B' roads."

Ken Gregory, a local motorist, added: "The diversion route here is barmy. Who on earth will drive nine miles around this tiny stretch of roadworks when there are plenty of local shorter routes instead."
