Bogus callers warning issued to residents in the Burnham area

-

Residents in the Burnham-On-Sea area are being urged to be wary of strangers at the door asking for money for street lighting repairs.

Sedgemoor District Council has been alerted to the problem that a bogus caller is claiming to be visiting households on behalf of local authorities.

Council spokeswoman Sam Taylor told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We have received reports of bogus callers going door to door asking for money in relation to street lighting repairs.”

“We have been advised the bogus caller is claiming to be visiting on behalf of local councils.”

“Sedgemoor District Council does not ask sub-contractors or staff to approach residents for money under any circumstances. This matter has now been reported to the police.”

“If a customer has recently received a door to door caller and been asked for their bank details or cash they should phone the police immediately.”

If, at any time, a customer has any doubt about the identity of a person telephoning or visiting and claiming to work for Sedgemoor they should request their full name and extension telephone number and ring 01278-435435 (Sedgemoor Direct) to confirm the staff members identity before giving any personal details.

All staff carry ID badges with the Sedgemoor logo clearly displayed. No staff will ever ask for cash or bank details during a home visit.

Those wishing to pay council bills can do so by going online at www.sedgemoor.gov.uk or calling 01278-435435.
