Collections of food for needy local people have been taking place at Burnham-On-Sea’s Tesco store this weekend – with large quantities being donated.

The team from Burnham and Highbridge’s Foodbank were on hand at the supermarket in Ben Travers Way to answer questions and accept food donations.

Recent figures show demand for food donations at Burnham and Highbridge’s Foodbank is continuing to soar as local people struggle with financial problems.

Over 550 packs of three-day emergency food supplies were provided to local people by the Highbridge Area Foodbank during the period from April–September 2016, compared to 291 during the same period in 2015.

Of this number, 202 went to children. Organisers say the top three reasons for Foodbank referrals are benefit delay 32%; benefit change 30%; and low income 14%.
