Tributes paid to community-spirited Burnham-On-Sea resident

-

Tributes have been paid to a community-spirited resident in Burnham-On-Sea who has passed away this week.

Jim Tancock, 78, pictured here on the left, was the former President of Burnham-On-Sea Rotary Club. He has passed away following a heart illness.

Ashley Edwards, the current President of Burnham Rotary Club, said this week: “Jim was involved in all aspects of the Rotary Club, both locally and further afield.”

“He was always a very enthusiastic, positive member who was very active and will be greatly missed.”

In his younger days, Jim was a former captain of the Great Britain water polo team and later became its coach.

That interest in water sports was also behind his decision to launch Burnham Rotary Club’s popular annual Swimarathon fundraising event, which is still held each year at Brean Splash.

Continuing the water theme, during his time as Rotary President, Jim raised thousands of pounds for Burnham-On-Sea’s rescue hovercraft charity BARB Search & Rescue and the RNLI when he picked his charities of the year.

Jim, who lived in Burnham with his wife Janet for over 30 years, had a son Neil and daughter Alison.

A Memorial Service will be held at St Mary’s Church in East Brent at 11.30am on Wednesday 20th April. There will be no black ties or sombre clothes – the event will be a celebration of his life.
