Burnham Coastguards and RNLI called to 'kite surfer in difficulty'

Burnham-On-Sea Coastguards and lifeboats were called out on Sunday afternoon (January 31st) amid concerns for a kitesurfer in difficulty.

The crews were alerted at 1.49pm after reports that the person was in difficulty in the sea near Burnham's lower lighthouse.

Fortunately, as the Coastguard team neared the scene in their truck, it was clear that the person was safely back on the beach.

"This was a good call as the surfer had a tangle in his sail and this could have been potentially dangerous if he hadn't been able to self-recover," said a Coastguard spokesman.

"It is always better to be safe and our eagle-eyed beach users are a valued asset to keep the coast safe. If you see someone in danger dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard."

The RNLI lifeboats were ready to launch and were stood down by Coastguards after the incident was labled a 'false alarm with good intent'.
