MEP speaks out at launch of new Burnham ‘leave EU’ campaign group

-

A member of the European Parliament has joined dozens of residents from across the Burnham-On-Sea area at the launch of a new pressure group campigning for local people to vote against staying in the European Union.

The new group ‘Sedgemoor Leave.EU’ was launched in Brent Knoll on Friday by South West MEP Dr Julia Reid and Helen Hims, who was Burnham’s UKIP parliamentary candidate in last year’s General Election.

The duo, pictured at Friday’s launch in The Fox & Goose Inn, said the group is gearing up for a hard fought campaign.

Helen Hims told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The room was full to bursting with almost 50 people. I had no idea how many people would come but we had standing room only.”

“There’s a lot of support locally to leave the EU and it’s growing every day. The EU seems to do something every day that makes it more likely that we will leave. They are doing themselves a diservice.”

“We will be getting out on to street canvassing and going door-to-door in the Burnham area and talking to the public in the run-up to the vote.”

MEP Dr Julia Reid added: “I am optimistic of a win. I campaigned in the original 1975 referendum and have waited over 40 years for this to come along. I am a founder member of UKIP and have been a member for over 22 years, so we have fought long and hard for this referendum and it’s only happening now because of the arguments we have put forward to MPs. I am optimistic of success for the Leave EU campaign in this area.”

Helen Hims added: “I won’t pretend to be remotely ‘on the fence’; I’ve always been quite certain we should leave this tired, failing and expensive club, and take our place in the modern world.”

Burnham-On-Sea.com will be featuring all groups and sides of the European debate locally in the run-up to the vote
