The driver of this articulated lorry was lucky to escape without injury after his vehicle toppled into a ditch near Burnham-On-Sea last night (Thursday).

Police and fire crews were called to the 16-wheeler Scandia lorry in River Road between Burtle and East Huntspill amid initial concerns that the driver was trapped.

Driver John Paul said it had been a “heart stopping moment” when the lorry collapsed into the ditch, leaving his cab perched in the air, as pictured here.

“I was trying do a good deed by pulling over to let the traffic behind me pass, but the soft verge gave way and the lorry was pulled into the ditch,” he told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

“I am gutted it’s happened, but the people in the vehicles were wonderful and contacted the police and checked that I was OK.”

Fire crews from Burnham-On-Sea, Bridgwater and Glastonbury initially attended the scene and crews made the surrounding area safe.

The lorry was left in a precarious position, making it challenging work for the recovery crews.

They worked for several hours overnight to pull the lorry from the ditch and recover its load of wood chippings.
