A young Burnham-On-Sea athlete has become the region’s top runner at 5km in his age group.

Luke Prior, a sixth form pupil at King Alfred School in Highbridge, became the South Of England Under 20 5km Champion at the age of 18 on Sunday (June 12th).

Competing at Lee Valley Athletic Stadium in London, the first half of his race was tactical but Luke started to wind up the pace over the second half to bring him home in first place.

It was also a new personal best time of 15min 27sec, which sits him at 14th in the UK rankings with another year left in that age group.

Luke, who trains 50 hours a week, will become a full-time athlete from September when he starts at St Mary’s University in Twickenham, having secured a place sponsored by the London Marathon.

Also in Sunday’s race was Brent Knoll runner Oliver Dickinson, who is also a pupil at King Alfred School in Highbridge.

Oliver ran a confident race to come home in fifth place in a time of 16.08, which was another personal best time. Oliver has two years left in this age group.
